| Editorial Team | Sports News

The CIAA men's and women's basketball tournament will return to Baltimore for the next four years, highlighting the importance of relationships and partnerships within the community.

This event is projected to bring significant economic benefits, including $20 million in spending, $4.9 million in tax revenue, and the creation of 1,500 jobs, showcasing Baltimore's potential for future collaborations.

Charles Robinson announced that the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) men's and women's basketball tournament will take place in Baltimore for the next four years, marking a significant event for the city. The return of the CIAA tournament to Baltimore is framed as more than just a sporting event; it represents the strengthening of relationships, values, and partnerships between the CIAA and the city. Robinson emphasizes that this event marks a new chapter in the CIAA's long and distinguished history, with the community being an integral part of that legacy.

According to Visit Baltimore, the tournament is projected to bring $20 million in spending to the city over five days, benefiting local businesses and the economy significantly. The tournament is expected to generate approximately $4.9 million in tax revenue for Baltimore City, highlighting its economic impact. A noteworthy aspect of the tournament is that 92 black vendors will collectively receive $1.5 million in direct benefits, showcasing the tournament's commitment to supporting local minority-owned businesses. The event is projected to create around 1,500 jobs, further contributing to the employment landscape in Baltimore.

Despite uncertainties about the tournament's future in Baltimore after the previous year, there was a strong belief among local stakeholders that they had a competitive chance against Charlotte, which was also vying to host the event. Robinson highlights the importance of effectively telling Baltimore's story over the past four years, which played a crucial role in winning the tournament back.

Mark Anthony from the Greater Baltimore Committee notes that the city has not been as intentional in promoting itself, and the successful bid for the CIAA tournament serves as proof of the potential for collaboration and marketing. The upcoming tournament brings a sense of optimism among participants and vendors, who are looking forward to growth and enhancements in the event's execution and experience.

The collaboration among local organizations and stakeholders is seen as essential for making substantial investments and improvements in Baltimore's image and event hosting capabilities. The announcement is accompanied by a sense of excitement and readiness for the upcoming years as the CIAA tournament seeks to build on its legacy in Baltimore.

The overall sentiment reflects a commitment to not only hosting a successful sporting event but also to fostering community relationships and economic growth through the tournament.  The (CIAA),  Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association is the nation’s oldest Historically Black Athletic Conference.
